Norma Jean Hamrick
Mass of Christian Burial for Norma Jean Hamrick, 89, Lawrence will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. She passed away Friday, January 16, 2015 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born November 29, 1925 in Hays, KS the daughter of Joseph Jesse and Florence Clara Saindon Svoboda (Jilka).
She attended Glenn Grade School in Lecompton and graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence in 1943. She received nursing training in Topeka and worked at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She moved back to Lawrence in 1978 from Akron, OH where she had lived since 1961.
Norma enjoyed bowling and collected dolls. She also enjoyed visiting with friends and relatives.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
She was a Registered Nurse and worked in Lawrence primarily in OB-GYN, where she took care of new mothers and their babies until she retired in 1990.
She married Dale Coolidge Hamrick November 15, 1948 in Lawrence. He preceded her in death October 22, 1984.
Survivors include one son, Richard Hamrick of the home; and one brother, Charles Svoboda, Kansas City, MO, several cousins; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Joe Svoboda, Jr. and twin brothers, Lloyd Svoboda and Floyd Svoboda; and one sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Brune.
A rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. with a visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 19, 2015 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Cottonwood, Inc. and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
