Mary Etta Hurst Justis, 88, of Basehor, KS, died Thursday, December 13, 2012 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka. Mary Etta was born December 27, 1923, in Butler County, KS, the daughter of Arthur Grant and Ellen Sibbet Stauffer Hurst. She graduated from Soldier High School, then went on to earn a certificate from the Teachers Normal Training School and to teach in a one-room school house. She married Jack V. Justis on November 7, 1942, in Topeka, KS. They lived in the Topeka area until moving to Ozawkie, KS, in 1974. Mary Etta became a member of the Topeka Bible Church in 1953 and was very active there, and later, as a member of the Rock Creek Bible Church. She worked for the Kansas Department of Revenue for many years, retiring in 1988. She moved to Basehor in 2008. Mary Etta was always a very social person and it was common for gatherings of both family and friends to be held in her home. Until just recently, she hosted the weekly Thursday Morning Coffee Group, where much laughter was shared with dear friends. Family was the most important thing to her. She loved and accepted everyone unconditionally and was always ready with a listening ear. Mary Etta was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Jack V. Justis, on June 14, 2006, and by daughter Judy Quy, who died August 26, 1999. Survivors include four daughters; Jacketta Feasel and husband Ronald, Meriden, KS; Jolene Justis and husband Mike Cudworth, Kapaa, Hawaii; Jerie Tichenor and husband Carlos, Hoyt, KS; and Janice Garcia and husband Chris, Basehor, KS; ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Visitation for family and friends was held from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 17th at Topeka Bible Church, 1101 SW Mulvane St., followed by funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Burial followed in the Mayetta Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Midland Hospice House or the Meriden Community Library and may be sent in care of the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home, 214 Oak St. Bonner Springs, KS. 66012 913-422-4074
