Martin Lester Unfred
Martin Lester Unfred, 72, of Lawrence, KS., died Wednesday, August 19 at his home.He was born November 14, 1942 in Tonganoxie, KS., to Frank Lester and Ethel Walker Unfred. He was a 1962 graduate of Lecompton High School in Lecompton, KS. Martin served active duty in the US Navy for two years and the Navy Reserves for two years. He worked for Farmland Industries in Lawrence as a machinist for 32 yrs, retiring in 2000. He operated a tree service on the side, and worked as a mower for the Eagle Bend Golf Course for the last 14 yrs. He was a member of the Ozawkie American Legion, Post #225, the VFW Post # 852 in Lawrence, and the Eagles Lodge # 309 in Lawrence. Martin was also an avid golfer.He married Sandra Irene Matlock on April 10, 1965. She preceded him in death on October 14,1990. He then married Gwendolyn Elaine Witcher in Miami, OK on Dec. 1, 2000. She survives of the home. Other survivors include two sons, Steven and his wife Laura Unfred, McLouth, KS and Michael and his wife Nicki Unfred, Topeka, KS., three step children, Pamela Russell and her partner Cathy Sunderland, Manhattan, KS, Steve Weis, Wamego, KS., Brett and his wife Sarah Weis, Salina, KS., one brother, Bruce Unfred, Hempill, TX., and three sisters, Loretta Deskin, Bloomington, IN., Twila Higgins, Lawrence, KS., and Marsha Jenkins, Whittenburg, AZ., Four grandchildren, Steven, Ethan, Cole, Taylor six step- grandchildren, one great grandchild, Benjamin, and four step great grandchildren and many, many friends. Services with military honors will be 11:00AM Monday August 24, at the Perry American Legion in Perry. Visitation will be one hour prior to services 10-11AM at the legion. Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, KS. Memorials may be made to the Perry American Legion or the Salvation Army in Lawrence.
