The Guest Book is expired.

Leona R. Wiemers, 97, of Tonganoxie, KS., died on Monday, March 20, 2017 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, KS.

Leona was born the daughter of Frank and Hilda Roseman on January 28, 1920 in Diller, NE. She grew up on the family farm and was married in her parents' home on January 26, 1939 to Alfred Wiemers, who preceded her in death in 1997.

Leona and Alfred started their marriage on a farm near Diller, then moved to a farm near Washington, KS. in 1950. They raised two children, Karel and Larry, and resided in the Washington area until the mid-1960s, when they followed a job opportunity to Beatrice, NE. Leona was primarily a homemaker, but also worked at various jobs in Beatrice until she retired. She and Alfred enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing cards and going to dances.

Leona was a wonderful cook and was known by many for her delicious cinnamon rolls. She spent hours preparing holiday dinners to be sure all of the family favorites were on the table, and she often expressed her love by having homemade cookies, cake or pie in hand when she visited her children and grandchildren.

At age 89, Leona moved to Tonganoxie, KS. to be closer to family where she lived independently until her death. With her fun-loving personality, she enjoyed watching college basketball and K-State volleyball, visiting with friends, and going to the Dairy Queen on Friday nights. Having lived nearly a century on this earth, she saw a lifetime of advancements, and she did her best to keep up with all of them, evidenced by her avid interest in tracking her family and friends on Facebook.

Her greatest joy was seeing her family and attending sporting events, show choir competitions, theatrical productions or nearly anything that involved her children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren. She was their biggest fan, and they were blessed to receive cards or special notes from her on every occasion.

Leona is survived by a daughter Karel Johnson, Tonganoxie; a son, Larry Wiemers (Sandi), Clay Center; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her four siblings and her son-in-law.

Visitation for Leona will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the Tonganoxie United Methodist Church, 328 E. 4th Street, with the funeral service immediately following. Internment will be at the city cemetery in Washington, KS., with a graveside service on Sunday, March 26 at 1:00 p.m.
