Berniece G. Baker, 95, Lawrence, died at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, on Sunday, April 9, 2017. Berniece was born on February 16, 1922, at Quenemo, Kansas, to Wilbur and Pearl Lane Yockey. Berniece grew up at Waverly, where she graduated from Waverly High School. She had worked in Retail Sales in Topeka for many years. She was a member of the Church of Christ. On January 3, 1942, she married Jewell E. Baker, in Ottawa, Kansas. They were the parents of three daughters. Jewell died on September 21, 1984.
Berniece was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Willard and Harold Yockey, and a sister Ruby Pyle. Berniece is survived by her daughters, Debra (John) Curry, Osage Beach, MO, Judy (Donald) LaFond, Lawrence, and Nancy McMillan, Branson, MO, a brother, Merle (Marilyn) Yockey, Wichita, a sister in law, Bonnie Brooks, Lee Summit, 7 grandchildren, Tammy (Dan) Yergey, Shane (Kelli) Curry, Dustin (Laura) Curry, Misty (Mark) Gimlin, Bobby, Troy, and Randy White, 13 great grandchildren, Alex, Caleb, and Joshua Axlund, Ryan and Kendra Yergey, Reese, Regan, Colton, Elise, Ethan and Emersyn Curry, Cole and Chance Gimlin, and many nephews and nieces. She loved her family reunions, canning, flowers, and her church family. She was an avid fan of KU basketball.
Services will be Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at 11:00 A.M., at the Southside Church of Christ,1105 W 25th St, Lawrence. The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the church. Graveside services will be at the Waverly Cemetery, Waverly, Kansas, at 2:30 P.M. Debby,John and family I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember spending a lot of time while growing up at the Baker residence and have fond memories of Berniece being such a sweet, gentle woman with a delightful sense of humor. My prayers are with you Debby. She was so blessed to have such a wonderful daughter and family. Love you, Jody Miller Waldy.
