Ralph Meier Obituary

Ralph Edward "Ed" Meier, 67, of Kingsland, GA passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on February 7 after a long battle with cancer. Ed was born in Lawrence, KS on January 23, 1951 and spent his childhood in Lawrence and Trenton, NJ. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1969 and married Connie Jean Flory in 1971. They later divorced. Ed enlisted in the United States Navy in 1971 and spent most of his distinguished twenty-two year military career on Trident submarines. He retired in 1993 as a Master Chief Petty Officer. He was a life member of the VFW. Ed was most recently employed with General Dynamics Electric Boat Corporation in King's Bay, GA before retiring in 2017. Ed was a talented artist and musician and a brilliant mind. He was a math whiz who taught himself how to play the banjo at a young age. He was uniquely gifted when it came to anything car related (repairs, design, infinite knowledge of every make and model imaginable) and had quite the reputation, as a youngster, for turning the back streets of Lawrence, KS into drag racing strips. While still in high school, he started and managed his own roofing company. Ed was a quiet guy with a big heart. He loved his family and friends and especially enjoyed spending time with his four grandchildren, cheering them on at sporting events and dance recitals. And when his garage door was open, friends from near and far knew they were welcome to join him for some shop talk and an ice cold beer. Ed was predeceased by his parents Mary Kathryn (Fenton) Meier and Wilbur J Meier. He is survived by his siblings Tom Meier and Mary (Bob) Meier LeGer; children Marcy (Mitch) Meier Braselton, Justin Meier and Brandon (Becky) Meier; and grandchildren Jackie and James Braselton and Aubrey and Katie Meier. A private gathering of family and close friends will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to The American Cancer Society and VFW.

My brothers and I grew up down the street from our friends, the Meiers. We played sports, rode bikes, and got into mischief together. Eddie was a good athelete with a twinkle in his eyes and a huge grinning smile! I spent many a time with his sister Mary playing in the wonderful dollhouse that he and his brother and father built for her. I have such fond memories of that era. Thanks for the memories Eddie!
