Funeral services for Helen Hebor Scanlan, 86, Lawrence will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2017 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow the mass at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Mrs. Scanlan passed away Monday, May 15, 2017 at Brookdale of Overland Park.
Mrs. Scanlan was born January 18, 1931 in Bethlehem, PA, the daughter of George and Anne (Piripavel) Hebor. She married John William Scanlan on November 15, 1952 in Elizabeth, NJ. Mr. Scanlan preceded her in death on September 10, 2011.
Mrs. Scanlan was a devoted homemaker, dedicated to raising three generations of her family. She was a devout friend to members of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and School. As a member of the Lawrence Cosmopolitan Auxiliary she epitomized the club's motto of "…changing the world one person and one community at a time."
Survivors who will miss her loving smile include her sons, John William Scanlan II and wife, Amy; Michael Francis Scanlan and wife, Sharon; William Patrick Scanlan and wife, Elizabeth; four grandchildren, Shannon Kathleen Scanlan, Edward Lewis, Matthew Scanlan, Alea Scanlan; three great-grandchildren, John M. Sword, Karina Black, Nicholas Shirley; and great-great grandson, Damien Mitchell.
A rosary will be recited on Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. The family will greet friends following.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the St. Johns School construction fund for the performing arts theater addition, or Brookdale Hospice. Contributions may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, Ks. 66044.
