Fern Lawson Naff Hayes
Funeral services for Fern Lawson Naff Hayes, 93, Lawrence will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 19, 2013 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. She died Monday, December 16, 2013 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Fern was born on March 20, 1920 in Neosho Rapids, KS the daughter of Ralph and Olive May (Likes) Lawson.
She was a baker at the Dillons bakery in Lawrence until she retired in 1981. Then she was a daycare provider out of her home for many years. She had also worked as the cashier for senior dances (O.U.R.S.) for 18 years.
She was a member of Indian Hills Church of God in Lawrence. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary, 8 & 40 Auxiliary, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary to the Military Order of the Cootie (M.O.C.) Military Order of the Cooties Pup Tent 2 Strawberry Hill, Kansas City, KS, Jayhawk Chapter 22 of Disabled American Veterans of Lawrence Auxiliary, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, was a Chaplain several years, lifetime member of V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, and also past president, and was an active volunteer for Leavenworth VA Hospital for 20 plus years.
She was known by many as grandma and made the best homemade pies.
Her first marriage was to Phillip Donald Naff and he preceded her in death February 23, 1970. She later married David A. Hayes, Jr. on July 22, 1976 in Ottawa, KS. He preceded her in death October 16, 1997.
Survivors include her adopted daughter, Tina Stice and husband Danny; two grandchildren, Michelle Read (James), Jennifer Benschoter (Marco), all of Lawrence; two great grandchildren Marshawn, and Hudson; one brother Jack Lawson, Lawrence, and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by one brother, LeRoy Lawson.
The family will greet friends on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to O.U.R.S. for Senior Dances and may be sent in care of the Mortuary.
