Jim Hanson Obituary

Jim Walter Hanson

James Walter Hanson, 64, of Lake Dabinawa in Mclouth, Kansas died August 29, 2013 of esophageal cancer. Diagnosed on February 22, 2011, Jim was only expected to live six months but put up a very successful fight.

Jim was born to the late James J. Hanson and Irene Wavie Wesley on November 16, 1948 in Minneapolis, Kansas.

Jim graduated from Oakcrest High school in Mays Landing, New Jersey, served In the U.S. Navy from 1967-1970, attended Barton Community College, Great Bend KS. , then continued his education at Fort Hays State University where he received a degree in Early Childhood Education. Many years later, Jim went on to earn a masters degree in K-12 Behavioral Disorders at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. His teaching objective was to build confidence and self-worth in children, utilizing their own interests to help them succeed academically. In addition to his teaching career, Jim was a carpenter, a certified locksmith, and a studier of human nature.

Jim's passion in life was helping everyone around him, and being kind and grateful of everything in his life. He professed "love and gratitude" to all. He loved spending time at his residence on Lake Dabinawa barbequing, fishing, swimming, working in the Dabinawa community garden, and enjoying the view. Jim judged no one, and was in love with life. No matter how much pain he was in, to the very end, he would say, "we are so fortunate, we are so lucky". His favorite musical heroes consisted of John Lennon, Lou Reed, leon Russel, and Bruce Springsteen. He spent a lot of time writing poems, songs, and loving his dog, Morey.

Jim is survived by his son, J.J. Hanson; step son, Jake Glassey; life-long companion, Rose Hanson; sister, Susan Giannini; aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Jim has touched so many lives, and will be dearly missed. Those who knew him will always remember his most common catch phrases, "love and gratitude" and "it's all about the rock and roll!"

Jim was an extraordinary man, who possessed so many talents. We enjoyed some memorable years teaching together at Riverside Elementary. I will remember him for his sharp wit, his infectious laugh, and his genuine caring for the children he taught. Many fond memories of the work that we did together with Karen. Peace and love, Jim.

Mr. Hanson was my 6th grade teacher at Riverside Elementary in the early 90s. He introduced the concept of having "stores" in which we could bring items from home and sell them to each other using fake money he made us. We could use that money to buy things from him or each other. It was our favorite part of our day. I became quit "rich" with store money selling anything and everything I could get my hands on. It was fun and we all loved it. I'm sorry to hear of his painful passing, and I hope his family and friends can be comforted by their happy memories.
