Roy Larue Shobe, Jr.

Mass of Christian Burial for Roy Larue Shobe, Jr., 87, Lawrence will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 8, 2013 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Lawrence. He died November 2, 2013 at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.

Roy was born September 19, 1926 in Quenemo, Kansas the son of Roy Larue, Sr. and Edythe E. (Baldon) Shobe. He and his wife made their home in Oberlin, KS, and moved to Lawrence from Garnett, KS in 1997. They had also lived in Ottawa, KS.

He served his country in the United States Army as part of the Occupational Forces in Japan.

He worked for the U.S. Postal Service and retired in 1979. After his retirement, he owned and operated a Daylight Donut Shop, Catalog Store and Local Market.

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence, a life member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, former member of the V.F.W., Lions Club and was a Boy Scout leader. He volunteered for the Garnett Senior Center and at Hillcrest School in the 5th grade work shop.

His family always came first. He especially enjoyed family gatherings. He also enjoyed woodworking, carving, whittling, reading and playing cards.

He married Ann Wagner on June 26, 1949 in Denver, Colorado. She preceded him in death on September 24, 2011.

Survivors include eight children; Ken and wife Janice Shobe, of Oberlin, KS, Cindy and husband Don Whiteley, of Lawrence, KS, Becky and husband Wayne Cooper, of Edmond, OK, Debby and husband Terry Gunselman, of Lawrence, KS, Don and wife Ellen Shobe, of Lawrence, KS, Sandy and husband Terry Rush, of Oberlin, KS, Joe and wife Marie Shobe, of Wichita, KS, and Andy and wife Marcia Shobe, of Fayetteville, AR, sixteen grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Christy Shobe, granddaughter, Emily Shobe, and a great grandson, Alex Whiteley.

A Prayer Service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. The family will greet friends until 8:30 p.m.

The family suggests memorials in his name to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Good Samaritan Fund at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor or to the Grace Hospice and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
