Roy "Leon" Barnes

Roy Leon Barnes, 80, Baldwin City, Kansas, died Saturday, April 27, 2013.

A Funeral Mass was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 1, 2013.

Cremation is planned. Inurnment Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ottawa, will be held at a later date.

He was born on August 9, 1932 in Springfield, Missouri, the son of Lonnie and Maudie (Deeds) Barnes. Leon was a resident of Ottawa from 1956 until he retired in 1992. He lived outside of Loveland, Colorado from 1992 to 2001, Punta Gorda, Florida from 2001 to 2005, and then Baldwin City, Kansas from 2005 to 2013.

He graduated from Wellsville High School with the class of 1950.

He then went on to serve in the United States Marine Corp from 1952 to 1956. His first tour of duty was in the Korean War and later served as U.S. Embassy Guard in Switzerland. His decorations and citations included United Nations Service, Korean Service, National Defense Service and Korean PUC Good Conduct Medal.

On October 7, 1956 Leon was united in marriage with Denise C. Loehrer in Chicago, Illinois. She survives of the home.

Leon was a lifelong farmer, farming crops and livestock, retiring in 1992.

He was a member of the Annunciation Catholic Church in Baldwin City, and founding board member of Franklin County Rural Water District #5.

Survivors include his wife, Denise Barnes of the home; four sons, Kent Barnes and wife Carol of Fort Collins, Colorado, Mark Barnes and wife Sandy of Ottawa, Clayton Barnes of Ottawa, and Brian Barnes of Fort Collins, Colorado; seven grandchildren; sister, Martha Broers of Wellsville, Kansas; brother, William Barnes and wife Mernie of Garnett, Kansas; and sister-in-law, Geraldine Barnes of Spokane, Washington.

Preceding Leon in death are his son, Stephen Barnes; grandchildren, Brett and Nathan Barnes; parents, Lonnie and Maudie Barnes; and brother, Cleon Barnes.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067. An online Guest Book is available at www.dengelmortuary.com.
