Mary C. Spencer

Mary C. Spencer, 98, of Baldwin City, Kansas, passed away June 19, 2013, surrounded by her loving family at her home. Mary was born August 14, 1914, in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of George Mitchell and Frances Mary (Fischer) Mitchell. She grew up in Kansas City and attended North Kansas City High School. She moved to Baldwin City in 193, Coal Camp, Missouri in 1977, and back to Baldwin City in 1989, where she has lived since.

She was an office clerk for the State of Kansas Department of Revenue until her retirement in 1973. Early she worked at Fairfax General Motors Defense Plant building B-25 bombers during WWII. She was also the complex manager for Tauy Creek from 1990 until 1999.

In July 1936, Mary was united in marriage to Harry Spencer at Platte City, Missouri. They shared over 43 years of loving marriage until his death in 1979.

She is also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Donald Lee Mitchell; sister, Helena Packham; brother, John Mitchell; and a granddaughter, Sandra Kaye Savner.

Mary is survived by three sons, Gordon Spencer, Thayne, Wyoming, Robert Spencer, Aurora, Colorado, David Lee Spencer, Pineville, Missouri; a daughter, Mary Hastings, Farmington, Missouri, a brother, Floyd Mitchell, Kearney, Missouri, Frances Foley, Kansas City, Missouri; Twenty-one grandchildren , including Cathy (Rodney) Gilges of Baldwin City; sixty-five great grandchildren; and forty-five great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 24, 2013 Ives Chapel United Methodist Church, Baldwin City. Burial followed at Chapel Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City, Kansas will be at 2:00 p.m. The family will met with friendsSunday afternoon at the Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, Baldwin City.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Ives Chapel United Methodist Church or Douglas County Visiting Nurses, c/o Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, P.O.Box 64, Baldwin City, Kansas 66067. Condolences may be sent to the family through www.lamb-roberts.com.
