Ralph G. "RG" Henley

Funeral services for Ralph G. "RG" Henley, 88, Lawrence, KS, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Military graveside services will be conducted at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence. He died Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born November 23, 1924 in Sedalia, Missouri the son of Elver and Eva Belle (Miller) Henley.

He graduated from Smith Cotton High School in 1941 and served nearly three years as Quarter Master Second Class on the USS LST 181 in the South Pacific during World War II. He went to Kansas University following the war and received his Bachelors of Science and Jurist Doctor Degrees by 1952. R.G. Henley was regular Army commissioned in 1950 and served in the Army Artillery Corp from 1952 to 1970 serving in the Korean War from 1953-54 and again in Korea 1965-66. He formerly taught at the Army General Staff and Command College at Ft. Leavenworth. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1970.

Colonel Henley returned to the University of Kansas and received his Masters' in Business (MBA) degree in 1972 and worked for the Judicial Administration to the Kansas Supreme Court retiring in 1996.

He was a member of the KU Alumni Association and the Williams Fund. For several years, he published a newsletter for the Retired Officers Association. He was currently involved in the Military Officers Association and was life-long avid reader.

He married Joy Wood on December 24, 1951 in Clay Center, KS. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include four daughters, Elizabeth H. Henley, of Lawrence, Kathy (husband, Jerry) Arensdorf, of Colby, KS, Vicky Henley, of Lawrence, KS, Margaret Henley, of Lawrence, KS; a son, Richard Henley, of Lawrence, KS; five grandchildren, Amanda Henley, Crystal Henley, Kristen Arensdorf, Ryan Arensdorf, Devereux Henley; and four great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials in his name to the Navy Seals Foundation and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.

Joy, I had not been at Neuvante House for some time and did not realize RG had passed until today when I noticed his obituary posted in the office there. I am so sorry. I know you have been through a lot the last few years. Just know that I am thinking about you and your family. Evonne Cooper
